Hon. J. William Fulbright
United States Senate
Washington, D. C. 20510
My dear Senator Fulbright:
In 1964, as evidenced by the enclosed copy of a letter from Senator George A. Smathers, I had occasion to communicate with him on the Cyprus issue.
At this time, I find it proper to address myself directly to you with reference to your statement of October 7th on CBS's television program, Face the Nation, namely, ". . . The Israelis control the policy in the Congress and the Senate . . . the emotional and political ties are too strong . . . this is a fact of life."
Permit me to extend my congratulations to you, Senator Fulbright, for the clarity of your convictions and for your courage in expressing such convictions publicly during these trying times. The objective of my letter is to express my support for your statement and also to elaborate further on the emotional nature of the problem, in view of its political and economic implications.
In fact, the emotional ties of our people with regard to the so-called state of Israel are so deeply rooted and confusing that they become the fundamental cause of our political and economic problems in the Middle East. To get to the point, Senator, in terms of Scriptural reference, there is no state of Israel. This indeed is a presumptuous misnomer willfully applied for the sake of promoting a premature situation the world needs not face at this time. There is no reasonable basis for the upheaval in the Middle East or for the polarization of our country and the Arab world or for the fuel crisis facing the United States. The so-called state of Israel has no Scriptural backing, it is a presumption, and an offense to the sublimity of the Christ Spirit—it is in fact a created state, perpetrated for an ulterior motive.
On the other hand, we must stand fast and recognize that there is in fact an indisputable reality, an obedience, and a sacred duty to maintain the ideal of the "Land of Judah," which is the legitimate and Scriptural home promised to the Jews of the world. Such a nation must exist, and it is our obligation to commit ourselves to this fact; but it is not the privilege of that people to demand expanded borders and the use of American material and moral support for the fulfillment of such a mission.
The confusion arises from the fact that what should have been called the "Land of Judah" was prematurely and ambitiously called the state of Israel. These are two distinct and separate entities [emphasis added]—genealogically, religiously, and historically intertwined, but still separate and distinct. It is when the true Israel shall surface that the Scripture shall be fulfilled and not prior. For the present, there is no evidence of the tangible existence of the nation of Israel as referred to in the Scripture. Therefore, there is no state of Israel, but at best a "Land of Judah."
Refer to the following: "For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah [emphasis added], saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it" (Jer. 30: 3).
"How long wilt thou go about, 0 thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity . . ." (Jer. 31: 22, 23).
"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast" (Jer. 31: 27).
"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt . . . . But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel [emphasis added]" (Jer. 31: 31, 32, 33)."
The realization of Israel is still in the future. We are precipitous and overreactive to let ourselves fall prey to a strong lobby founded on the principles of an ambitious and insatiable nationalism. There is no justifiable religious context in this involvement presently and it must not be demanded of our people to become emotionally and thus materially involved.
Thank you for your attention.
Greetings in Christ,
