A magnificent international event  took place on June 10, 1990, when over  a hundred participants from various countries—Ladies of Saint Helen, Knights of Saint Constantine, and honored guests—boarded an elegant craft on an all-day cruise around Lake Konstanz to celebrate with a luncheon, festivities, and a cake-cutting ceremony the honor of Cyprus and its Colors.  Nothing could have been more appropriate on that occasion than that the Order of Constantine the Great and Helen sail at Lake Konstanz on board the ship Konstanz.  The credit for the accomplishment went to the German Knights and Ladies.

The event became even more memorable with the participation of the public that came in large numbers at every port to witness the colorful and dignified processions of the Order.  The activities commenced at the Bayerischer Hof and at the plaza in front of that hotel in Lindau, Germany—beginning and ending point of the cruise.

In addition to the fifteen-piece band of the Order, each port city participated with its own band in a marvelous musical array, including the National Anthems of Cyprus and of the corresponding countries visited.  The Mayors of each city also made their appearance, extending Keys to the City and like honors, and  invitations for champaigne toasts on board adjacent ships docked at their port.  Towns involved were Lindau; Bregenz, Austria; and Rorschach, Switzerland.

of an injustice.
The following is NOT a suggestion for a new flag.
A new flag for Cyprus sets a precedent that will condone, confirm, and
glorify aggressiveness of any rapacious and illegal force against a people.

A symbolic Remembrance of an injustice against the Island of Cyprus.
The
SYMBOLISM:

The ominous northern sunrise sheds light on the Truth about Cyprus.
The Morning Star symbolizes the Island’s poetic mythology at Dawn.
The sunrays symbolize the Island's diverse and trying history.
The Dove bearing the branch symbolizes the Island’s need for Truth in Peace.
The green color symbolizes the Island’s wealth and prosperity.
The surrounding blue symbolizes the Island’s beauty and
Singular Governance and insular Independence.

CYPRUS

The occupation of Cyprus by Turkish forces in 1974 caused a terrible tragedy to the rich cultural heritage and the cultural identity of northern Cyprus. Not only all Greek names were changed, but all testimonies to the ancient Greek culture were eliminated, churches and monasteries were desecrated, pillaged, destroyed and left to decay. Tombstones were smashed, archaeological sites ravaged, and art objects from heritage places such as countless icons, frescoes and mosaics were taken away to end up in the illicit trade of antiquities. [emphasis added]

The extent of this sale of cultural heritage in northern Cyprus is shown by the crime story of the art dealer Aydin Dikman who was arrested in Munich in 1997:

Following the occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkish forces in 1974, looters stripped the region's churches, removing an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 icons, several dozens of major frescoes and mosaics dating from the sixth to the fifteenth century, and thousands of chalices, wooden carvings, crucifixes and Bibles. Efforts by the Autocephalous Church of Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus have resulted in the return of some of these objects, but the majority remains lost. A major breakthrough came this past October, when Munich police arrested 60-year-old Aydin Dikman after he was videotaped selling stolen goods. The arrest was made possible by the co-operation of Dikman's former client, Dutch art dealer Michel van Rijn. In apartments rented by Dikman, police found frescoes, mosaics and icons estimated to be worth more than $40 million. The artworks were taken to the Bavarian National Museum for evaluation, while Dikman was taken to prison.

UN-Annan Plan fails US&Cyprus [includes more News Releases]

THE GOOD NEWS
(Source: Athens News Agency Bulletin & Press Review
[Greek Embassy, Los Angeles Press Office], September 9, 2003.)

Cyprus FM [Foreign Minister] Iacovou satisfied with three-year extension of US Import restriction, NICOSIA, 09/09/03 (CNA/ANA).

Cyprus Foreign Ministry has expressed satisfaction with the decision of the American government to extend for three years an import restriction on Byzantine ecclesiastical and ritual ethnological material from Cyprus, unless such material is accompanied by an export permit issued by the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

In a press release on Monday the ministry said the categories of Byzantine ritual and ecclesiastical ethnological material subject to the import restriction include objects of metal, wood, ivory and bone, textiles, stone (mosaics) and frescos. They range in date from approximately the 4th century AD through approximately the 15th century AD.

The ministry said the restriction first went into effect in April 1999 in response to a request from the government of the Republic of Cyprus seeking protection of its cultural heritage under Article 9 of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.

The three-year extension of the restriction is the maximum allowable by US law, the press release concluded.

Expansion of Western Civilization: from Constantine the Great to Constantinople and Byzantium and onward to America

NEW BYZANTIUM is The AMERICAS
We are sincerely pleased you have come to visit our Site and we extend to you our warmest greeting in the highest tradition of BYZANTIUM.  Our Principal goal is to impart to you heretofore intentionally little known facts about BYZANTIUM as the foundation of Western Civilization.  We will avoid knowingly withholding the truth as an aim to social disorientation.  Practice of historical deception must cease.  We hope that you will enjoy our contribution to the fullest.  Welcome.
Constantine the Great began his eventful climb in York, England and reached the apex of his achievement in Constantinople, the City that he founded and named after himself (Constantine+Polis [city]=Constantinople).  By means of these pages, our readers travel through time, touching upon the early periods, including that of Constantine, of historical Constantinople, and of Hagia Sophia—the nexus of the Christian world—to arrive at places and events of our present day.  Our readers reach the outermost limit to which both Eastern and Western Christian groups expanded, bringing forth the flower of Western Civilization.  That limit is the Western Hemisphere as a whole, and in particular the coast of California near San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge where the two groups converged  as they approached from the North and from the South.
